Piano keys keep the melody drowning on while steady drum beats drive home the continuous suffering pounding his spirit. If Boat was the introduction, Salt Water is the first page of chapter one and instantly commands the listener to sit up and take note as a more serious tone falls over the storyteller and his backing track. It very much echoes the idea of old folklore storytelling and gets things off to a cracking start. The track itself is a toe-tapper and builds with the help of a choir that adds happier tones to the underlayer of grief. His crystal-clear vocals set the emotional tone and perform with a vulnerability that indicates what’s to come. From the very first note, a familiar warmth that is synonymous with the Ed of 2004 engulfs the heartbreaking words. Opening the musical monologue as he means to go on, Ed introduces the idea of a weather motif that he would use continuously throughout the record to explain his struggle.
